Q: Is the Smoke Lid made of oak?
A: That's a good question! The answer is, Yes! The Smoke lid is made of oak. This is an important feature of our cocktail smokers. We chose oak because this is the same type of wood whiskey barrels are made from for aging whiskey. When the wood chips in cocktail smokers are burned, some of the wood from the cocktail smoker itself can be burned. If it's oak, that's perfectly fine as the oak flavor and aroma naturally compliments the whiskey. If a cocktail smoker is made from pine, beach wood, or other types of wood it can have a very unpleasant taste and smell.
Q: Does Aged and Charred glue multiple pieces of wood together to make the smoke lid?
A: No. Our Smoke lids are made from a single piece of oak so we don't have to glue pieces together. It makes for a nicer-looking product and also avoids the smell and poor taste of glue.
Q: Does this come with a torch?
A: The Complete Kit, Basic Kit and Variety Kit include a 4-burner butane torch to create a continuous flame at a high temperature. Some other brands include 1-burner butane torches that may not provide the consistent temperature or pressure needed to sustain combustion.
Q: What types of cocktails can I smoke?
A: Smoke pairs great with whiskey, bourbon, and rum based cocktail, because these liquors are aged in charred barrels. The best part of smoking a cocktail is experimenting with different recipes. Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, and other whiskey and bourbon based cocktails are excellent with smoke. Try it on smoked rum drinks, smoked margaritas, smoked wine, smoked beer, and more can be great as well!
Q: Will spice or herb mixes work with this, or can only wood chips be used?
A: Some spices and herbs will work, just be careful which ones you use as some are probably quite potent. Also, be careful not to use anything which might clog the screen, such as dried fruit.
